Domaine de Mourchon, deep in the southern Rhône, is one of a handful of French estates which have been ever-present in Mr.Wheeler’s range. We have been buying from the Mckinlay family’s picturesque domaine in Séguret for around 20 years, and the wines seem to get better and better with each vintage.
The flagship wines here are Séguret Tradition and Grande Réserve. These are big, rich, expressive wines, and both hail from the exceptional 2019 vintage. The Grande Réserve is made from older vines, and spends a little time in oak barrels, which adds an extra level of power and spice to the warm, vibrant bramble fruit we find in the Tradition.
They also make a delicious white ‘La Source’ Côtes du Rhône is a crisp, aromatic blend of viognier, grenache blanc, marsanne and roussanne. It has an alluring, exotic character to it, with a luscious, rounded, peach and apricot palate. We have just shipped the 2021 vintage, and it is beautifully fresh, and very food-friendly. Last but not least, their superb 2020 Loubié rosé completes the range, a blend of grenache and syrah with "juicy summer fruit and a herbaceous framework" as Kate describes on the video.
This is a really outstanding set of wines, regularly in receipt of very good reviews too from the leading critics, Jancis Robinson is a fan ("I have long admired the reds of Domaine de Mourchon"), and Robert Parker has awarded Walter McKinlay’s wines some impressive scores.
