2023 Godello, Pagos del Galir, Valdeorras
We've been 'banging the drum for the quality of Spanish wines for quite a while here at Mr.Wheeler. Every time we taste through a range, we are taken by the diversity, innovation and sheer drinkability we find from every corner of the country. Spain is justifiably renowned for its traditional reds such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but the new wave of exceptional whites has very much grabbed our attention, and this delicious Godello, from Valdeorras in Galicia is one of our favourite new finds.
Galicia, in the verdant North-West, is very much Spains white-wine hotspot you may have come across the regions Albarino before, but Godello is very much its other signature variety, combining aromatic freshness, expressive ripe citrus and orchard fruit and rich texture.
Tasting note
The Pagos del Galir Godello comes from a small, specific vineyard, classed as premier cru in the region. I was taken with its striking, perfumed bouquet, with spring blossom, orchard fruit and lemon/lime zip. The palate is vibrant and fruit forward, but also silky and quite elegant, with a crisp citrus rush and a rich, almost Burgundian structure. Quite moreish, and very food-friendly.
About the producer:
Valderorras is on the mountainous, eastern fringes of Galicia in north-west Spain. Its flagship grape Godello grows on the slatey-sloped hillsides along the river Sil. Virgen del Gali, part of the CVNE group, was established in 2002. Winemaker Miguel Tienda Baena is at the helm, and has a real passion for the Godello grape, which is carefully hand-picked here, then aged on its lees for four months in stainless steel tanks enhancing freshness, and texture.
