Simon W | 2019 Mâcon Uchizy, Domaine Talmard
I started importing this superb Mâcon in the early 2000’s, Matthew Jukes wrote it up in The Mail as the best kept secret and emphasised that it knocked many wines off their perch from twenty or so kilometres north. Simon Hoggart was ecstatic about it in one of The Spectator Wine Club Offers in the mid 2000’s.
This is quite simply a great wine, lovely ripe white peach aromas, in the mouth full-on with mature chardonnay and the correct amount of acidity, thus perfectly balanced, and it has good length. I drank a smidgeon five minutes ago and this was the end of the bottle and I can still taste it. By the way there are two Macon Uchizy’s available on the market, this one by Mallory & Benjamin Talmard is infinitely superior to the effort produced by their cousin also called Talmard.
We enjoyed it last night with a fillet of sea bass - grilled, comfortably accompanied by a vinaigrette de consommé, topped with lumpfish caviar. Oops, almost forgot the first course, not a starter as a cousin reminded me it as being a vital part of a motor car, with diced ripe avocado with Greenland Prawns and mayo! Enjoy!
This is from our last shipment of the 2019 and there may be a gap before the 2020 is ready to be shipped, so worth getting supplies in if you fancy it.
I have drunk the Talmards' White Macons for more than twenty years now. Often visiting them in Uchizy. Unfortunately this has not been possible for the past two years so I am delighted to have obtained this vintage now. It is just as good as all their years . Wonderfully balanced and a pleasure to drink either with or without food.
