The Wines:
2015 Château Ramafort, Cru Bourgeois, Médoc
Having recently retasted the 2015 Château Ramafort I would now strongly recommend that you begin exploring this outstanding, much-applauded vintage. The ripeness, fresh acidity, and well-structured tannins its stellar growing conditions provided are now coming into their own as this Cru Bourgeois so deliciously demonstrates. Fine, sophisticated nose of restrained, ripe fruit, and generous palate of ripe, almost stewed red fruit with hints of spice, heather and tobacco. Lots of complex flavours here supported by strong silky tannins and streaks of minerality. Endless finish.
2020 Stone's Throw Pinot Noir, Greenhough, Nelson
This organic pinot noir delivers ripe fruit at lower alcohol with just a little bit of oak to allow the pure fruit to shine. There is a feel of Burgundy about it, but with an extra layer of depth and concentration.
2015 Marqués de Tosos, Gran Reserva, Cariñena
Gran Reserva 2015 is gorgeous after a prolonged period of aging (sixty months) before release. It has a complex array of aromatic flavours that explode on the palate. A serious Gran Reserva to savour with at least ten years of superb drinking ahead of it.
2021 Pouilly-Fumé, Domaine Des Fines Caillottes, Jean Pabiot et Fils
Pouilly-Fumé is an appellation with a similar terroir to Sancerre. So similar, in fact, that differentiating it from its overshadowing neighbour is often futile. However, not so with Jean Pabiot and his Domaine des Fines Caillottes. Here is a rich sauvignon with beguiling citrus fruit flavours and layers of sleek minerality from a terroir of chalk, stones and fossilised shells, all with that signature whiff of flintlock, confirming youre on Pabiots side of the Loire. A very complete wine and quite a delicious one.
2023 Pouilly-Fuissé 'Vieilles Vignes', Domaine Gonon
This delightful Mâcon has all the hallmarks of good white Burgundy. The Chardonnay flavours are ripe and inviting; melon combined with more tropical fruits. The texture has a creaminess to it, and there is a delicate biscuity note from a good period of lees ageing. There is complexity and precision here making this a great all-rounder.
2021 Domain Road Pinot Gris, Central Otago
From the world's most Southerly wine producing region, Domain Road delivers an enchanting, honey and spice-tinged pinot gris made very much in an Alsatian mould. Luscious and rewarding.
