ABOUT THIS WINE

Although the prices of Burgundys most famous villages may be creeping gradually upwards,  with a bit of legwork, you can still find good value in the region. Look to the Côte Chalonnaise. Look to where the Vignerons de Buxy family of growers make a range of delicious Montagnys - staples of our range for many years - where their Premier Cru Les Coères remains one of our all-time favourites.

The much-overlooked Côte Chalonnaise is the next major appellation that follows the Côte de Beaune southwards. Here, four villages (Buxy is one) comprise the smaller, 350-hectare appellation of Montagny where Les Vignerons de Buxy collective has been harnessing this gravel, clay and limestone-based terroir for almost ninety years. Its also here where vintage and appellation go much further for your money.

And Les Coères is indeed a whole lot more: a serious chardonnay; brimming with citrus, notes of tropical fruit and spring blossom - intense, expressive, and very Burgundian. White peach and ripe lemon flavours abound with great depth and texture. Unoaked also, where extended ageing on fine lees bring hints of cloves, roasted nuts and smoky spice leading on to a classy, mineral twist on the finish. A very well-made Burgundy punching well above its weight all in all fantastic value.

Tasting note:
This is quite a serious chardonnay, brimming with citrus, with notes of tropical fruit and spring blossom - intense and very Burgundian. White peach and ripe lemon flavours are very much in evidence here with great depth, texture, hints of vanilla and a touch of cloves and smoky spice leading on to a classy, mineral twist on the finish. A very well-made Burgundy which punches well above its weight and shows fantastic value.

Region Information

Region Information - Côte Chalonnaise

Just a few short miles south of the famous Côte d’Or appellations of Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, the Côte Chalonnaise produces some of the best value wines in the whole of Burgundy.

The villages of Rully and Montagny are the source of perhaps this region’s best white wines, and have always proved enduringly popular introductions to the wonderful world of Burgundy. The wines of the Côte Chalonnaise share much in common with their more illustrious neighbours to the north, but tend towards a lighter, earlier-drinking style. Made, of course, from chardonnay, to the same exacting standards as in the Côte d’Or, this is an excellent illustration of the character of the wines made in the village of Montagny.

Producer Information - Vignerons de Buxy

The Vignerons de Buxy are in the Côte Chalonnaise, in the south of Burgundy. Established over 80 years ago, this is a collaboration of 120 Burgundian families, all inspired by the same values of solidarity, quality and respect for their Burgundian heritage.

Growing and harvesting of grapes is rigorously controlled, and modern winemaking innovations go hand-in-hand with traditional methods and expertise. Well-known 'village wines' such as Givry and Montagny are made here, as well as some delicious Bourgognes blancs and rouges.
