2020 Barolo 'Rocche di Castiglione', Monchiero, Piedmont

Nebbiolo is sometimes referred to as the ‘pinot noir of Italy,’ and upon pouring, you can immediately see why: its clean, bright, limpid red hue in the glass is fully reminiscent of a fine red burgundy. Then, with a quick swirl, the release of pure, vibrant aromas of red cherries, sultanas, a hint of spice, and wood polish.

On the palate, an initial tannic grip quickly subsides to reveal a core of ripe, red currant, cherry, and spice. There's a sweetness to the fruit that emerges with a post-tasting breath, accompanied by a distant sweet mulberry and leathery character that lingers on the finish.

Thoroughly enjoyable on its own. It's such an elegant wine, yet with depth and concentration. Its youthful vibrancy would be a winner with roast game or a beautifully grilled fillet steak.
