2021 Pouilly-Fuissé 'Vieux Murs' Loron
Pouilly-Fuissé is one of Burgundy's most famous names, and its wines stand head and shoulders above most others from the Mâconnais, much as the rock of Solutré towers above the region's vineyards. The historic Maison Loron's 'Vieux Murs' cuvée is a very classy expression of chardonnay and a firm favourite amongst the Mr.Wheeler team.
Tropical stone fruit and grapefruit dominates the palate initially, then give way to a warming, toasty character (no doubt fromtime spent in fine French oak) that culminates in a zingy, fresh, mineral-infused finish lingering on and on. And on. Delicious.
About the producer
Maison Loron, located in the Mâconnais, is one of the oldest vineyard owners in the south Burgundy, tracing its history back to 1711. The best vineyards of Pouilly-Fuissé - around the famous rock of Solutré are at higher altitude than most of the Mâconnais, giving the wines an extra level of character, aromatic intensity and precision. Legend has it, the original prehistoric inhabitants of the rock would hunt horses by driving off the edge of this sheer drop of several hundred metres.
