Although the prices of Burgundys most famous villages may be creeping gradually upwards, with a bit of legwork, you can still find good value in the region. Look to the Côte Chalonnaise. Look to where the Vignerons de Buxy family of growers make a range of delicious Montagnys - staples of our range for many years - where their Premier Cru Les Coères remains one of our all-time favourites.
The much-overlooked Côte Chalonnaise is the next major appellation that follows the Côte de Beaune southwards. Here, four villages (Buxy is one) comprise the smaller, 350-hectare appellation of Montagny where Les Vignerons de Buxy collective has been harnessing this gravel, clay and limestone-based terroir for almost ninety years. Its also here where vintage and appellation go much further for your money.
And Les Coères is indeed a whole lot more: a serious chardonnay; brimming with citrus, notes of tropical fruit and spring blossom - intense, expressive, and very Burgundian. White peach and ripe lemon flavours abound with great depth and texture. Unoaked also, where extended ageing on fine lees bring hints of cloves, roasted nuts and smoky spice leading on to a classy, mineral twist on the finish. A very well-made Burgundy punching well above its weight all in all fantastic value.
Tasting note:
This is quite a serious chardonnay, brimming with citrus, with notes of tropical fruit and spring blossom - intense and very Burgundian. White peach and ripe lemon flavours are very much in evidence here with great depth, texture, hints of vanilla and a touch of cloves and smoky spice leading on to a classy, mineral twist on the finish. A very well-made Burgundy which punches well above its weight and shows fantastic value.
