ABOUT THIS WINE
Read Critic Reviews

The joy of claret continues. You find it in this brilliant new discovery – the 2016 Château Poitevin, Médoc. Three-in-one joy, in fact: superb vintage (now drinking beautifully), vibrant AOC expression, under £20 a bottle. In other words, for the dedicated Bordeaux drinker, all that is required.

Because at this price, it’s a claret you should be buying in cases at a time. Your Bordeaux drinker is treated to layers of dark-berry fruit framed by supple tannins, where creamy textures and touches of toasty vanilla oak deliver a classic Médoc experience.

An experience that accounts for Château Poitevin’s subsequent upgrading to a superior ‘Cru Bourgeois’ AOC status with the release of their 2018 vintage.

They’re that good, and this sumptuous 2016 confirms it. It's also why we shipped an initial 150 cases upon its discovery. But understandably, these are disappearing quickly, so we would urge that you act now on today’s – well, joyful – offer. Then make some space in that cellar.

Tasting Note
This is a claret with so much to say. One with the presence and intensity we look for in the fine 2016 vintage, yet still in a very open, accessible style: powerful without the hard edge, juicy, plump with velvety tannins. An expressive, perfumed nose giving warm blackberry and cherry fruit. Subtle notes of fine tobacco, roasted coffee and exotic spice gradually emerge in luscious, supple cuvée that is elegant and nicely poised. Here, a lovely combination on the palate of exuberant black fruit, creamy texture with a touch of toasty vanilla oak.

What do the critics think?
“This offers violets and some aged meat, as well as ripe purple fruit, leading to a palate that has a smooth and velvety feel and plenty of tannin crunch. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. ”
90/100 points, James Suckling
“The 2016 Poitevin has a crisp, focused bouquet with pure blackberry and boysenberry notes tinged with crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite feminine in style with a silky smooth, black cherry and blueberry finish that caresses the senses. This is a well-crafted, utterly delicious Médoc.”
90/100 points, Neal Martin
